This is more than just a study of five wildly popular Evangelical novels; it also traces the recent history of Christian bookstores and Evangelical publishing, and how they helped create the creature that is now Evangelical thought and politics. Gripping and page-turning, it is just as fascinating--if not more!--as the books it discusses. The approach and structure itself is fascinating, moving from the simple storytelling of an experience in a bookstore, to description, analysis, and even occasional infiltrations into the realms of literary and cultural theory, then tying it all back into the world of online book reviews. All of this is done with a style that is relatively simple and graceful. I just finished reading it, and am already considering a summer class structured around it for my seminary students. Anyone interested in Evangelicalism, recent Christian History, Christian literature, or even niche bookstores and/or niche publishing should read this book! By applying this idea to Christian Fiction, Silliman provides an interesting lens for considering what evangelicalism really is, how it's shifted and how it became its current iteration. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from slater -- Insightful and Humanizing a Book for Everyone to Read : My evenings this last week have been unexpectedly enriched by this beautifully written book, Reading Evangelicals: How Christian Fiction shaped a Culture and a Faith by Daniel Silliman. A potentially stodgy read this was a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful read. Daniel asks, "What is an Evangelical?" He answers it in what might be seen as a quirky sort of way, suggesting that we can find out by reading popular books sold in Christian bookstores! Instead of trying definitions that are political or theological, he brings us on a tour of the imagination of a community through the novels purchased, read, shared, and discussed over the period that the Christian Bookstore business flourished. We get a window into a community's imaginative universe in 5 acts. This cultural history is told with erudite analysis, charity and good humor, and approachable prose that makes it readable by and insightful to both the layperson and the scholar. If you teach religion, especially religion in America, you should consider this for a future course both for its content and the unique methodology it employs. If you are a journalist covering American religion, stop what you are doing right now and order a copy to read. If you are an evangelical or a post-evangelical, this book will help you better understand your own imaginative world. If you are a friend or neighbor to an evangelical, reading this book will help you be a better one. And finally, if you see evangelicals as primarily your political enemies, an “undifferentiated mass” that stands against you, be careful, reading this book may hand you back your humanity by uncovering that of your “enemy.” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jack Hartman -- An underutilized lens for understanding evangelicalism : This book is a great social history of recent evangelicalism. Silliman's writing balances empathy towards evangelicals/evangelicalism (he doesn't write with vitriol and seems to have some familiarity) but also points out a lot of the problematic trends and history behind these books. I thought it was fascinating to not do the traditional route and start with evangelicalism to try to explain the books but to start with the books as a means of explaining evangelicalism. As someone who read some of the books he analyses, I found some of the publishing history and biographical sketches of the authors fascinating. Also, the book is really accessible without reducing the complexity of the arguments (which I think is a hallmark of good writing). I will definitely be using this book for a sociology of religion seminar. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
